Walkability – What Does a Walk Score Actually Mean?

Not to brag (ok maybe a little) but our community has a walk score of 71! Pit this against our competition, who have walk scores in the 30’s and 40’s and we start looking good. Even the average walk score in Santa Maria is 50. But what exactly does that mean?

The website Walkscore.com bases your score on how many amenities can be reached in 20 minutes on foot. You can also check out what can be reached in 20 minutes by bike, bus or car- in both normal and rush hour traffic.

With a walk score of 71, it means from your front door on foot you can accomplish most errands including grocery shopping, nightlife and your morning coffee. Not only is this easier on the environment, it’s more convenient and you skip the headache of sitting in traffic.

Walk Score comes to this number by assessing hundreds of different walkable routes to stores, restaurants and even schools nearby. The closer you are, the more points you receive from a 5-minute walk to 0 points for anything 30 minutes or over. The site uses a number of different online resources to come to this conclusion including data from Google and the US census.

From Celebrations II in under .5 miles there are 7 grocery stores, over 20 restaurants, bars, 6 coffee shops and 15 stores including Target. Talk about convenience. We pride our community on being part of Santa Maria. With these distances, it’s easy to support local retail and really get to know your city.

Don’t just take our word for it though. Check out Walk Score and see for yourself how close you’re your favorite things are from home.
